Janaina Tschäpe is a visual artist working with video and photography for her installations. She was born in Munich, Germany but grew up in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. She has studied in New York, at the School of Visual Arts and in Hamburg, at the Hochschule fur Bildende Kuenste. Some of her solo exhibitions include shows at IMoMA, Dublin, Ireland; Sikkema, Jenkins & Co, New York; Galeria Fortes Vilaça, Sao Paulo, Brazil; Contemporary Museum of Art, St. Louis, USA; Nichido Contemporary, Tokyo, Japan ; carlier | gebauer, Berlin, Germany ; and in the prestigious Centre Pompidou of Paris and the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia in Madrid, Spain. Janaina Tschäpe's images deal with the relationship of her body and its perception with the world, replacing the human body in sites of mythical exchange. Hilda shows samples of both her video works and photography. The photos belong to her series 100 Little Deaths, in which the artist photographs herself in various landscapes and countries, face down on the floor, staging a continuous rite of passage which reinstalls her being among the inanimate elements and human space.
